Bartenders Blog (If you would like to contribute to our blog please e-mail us at blog@omahaflair.com) 7/27/08 Service First, Flair Second, Competition Always One of the most difficult hurdles to overcome as a flair bartender is the mistake people often make when they think we sacrifice service for flair. This is not without some justification. Unfortunately there are still "flair" bartenders out there that get to much into their shows and lose focus on the guest. We are here to serve first. Flair comes second. In order for us to grow our sport and gain more respect behind the bar we must remember that as we learn that bottle/ 2 tin working flair sequence for work, that often a flat to stall can be more impressive to the customer who really doesn't know the difficulty between one move and the next. Quick, precise and clean is the key to earning that respect. So put a piece of paper in the liquor room, office, or wherever you can be reminded of the FBA motto, "Service First, Flair Second, Competition Always." -JB 8/1/08 Bartending Schools - The real deal or a waste of time and money? Through years of market research on the subject of qualified worthwhile bar training, I have witnessed a common theme in many posts. In the USA specifically many are under the impression that it is a waste of time if not detrimental to finding a good bar job if someone has taken a bartending class. This is NOT true! Although one can start slow, working there way up from server or barback and eventually (sometimes years) move in to the money position of bartender. You are learning one establishments ways and when it is time to move on to a different style of bar or restaurant it can feel as though you are starting over. A qualified bartending school will teach all facets of the service industry. Not just drink recipes but mixology, guest interaction, the how and why of what it takes to be a professional bartender in any bar anywhere. In Europe (I know that is vague) barmen/women are held in high regard for there education. In places like Buenos Aires, Argentina many start service industry school at a young age. I feel that is part of the reason that some of the top mixologists, bartenders, and flair bartenders were not raised in our country but now thrive in the States. In short, there is much value to be had from a bartending school. It is up to you to do the research and pick one that is qualified. From there don't flaunt the knowledge in front of an owner (that may hate "schools") but use it to get a job and quickly surpass your peers. Bartenders aren't made overnight it takes years of experience but a solid foundation of bar education will get you there faster. -JB
